What is Homecoming?

Every year Flagstaff High School celebrates homecoming. While many people participate in the events, no one really knows what homecoming is or why so many High schools host it. While homecoming originally revolved around the beginning of certain sports, it has developed into its own event. Now, homecoming is a way to bring a school together and create community, with homecoming assembly helping to build school spirit. When asked why Flagstaff High School has homecoming, Principal Miller answered, "It's one of the many ways to build community and sense of belonging ... there's a place for everyone.”
Flagstaff High Schools’ homecoming assembly was on Thursday, September 11th. Once the assembly began, the school choir led the national anthem, following with the band and choir singing the school and fight song. Next, the color guard joined the band in a
performance of the song, “Sound of the City.” After this, the Hispanic club had a piñata where selected students hit the piñata for the duration of a traditional Hispanic song. Then, there was a sing-off between each grade, with the seniors winning, along with a cup stacking contest with the freshman winning. The next two events were the JV and varsity cheer squads performing their respective routines. Another activity included was glamor squad, the teams being freshman and sophomores together, juniors, and seniors. This resulted with the junior glamor squad winning. The last competition was two dodgeball games, with the final winners being the teacher’s team.
The assembly’s last main event was announcing the 2025-26 homecoming court. For freshmen, the princess was Sophie Wasserman, and the prince was Gio Serna. For sophomores, the princess was Layla Smith, and the prince was Broden Custer. For juniors, the princess was Morgan Maloney, and the prince was Sebastian Ziritt. For seniors, the queen was Addie Carpender, and the king was Camden Keeler. The teachers selected for court were Mrs. Guscott and Mr. Torp. The assembly ended with the homecoming parade beginning.
