Pride Club: Welcoming All Allies
Pride Club: Welcoming All Allies
Isabel Hernandez Rodriguez
There are a rich variety of clubs at Flagstaff High School, but one stands out positively and inclusively. This club is the Pride Club of course! This wonderful club is all about inclusion no matter the sexual orientation! We asked the president of the club a series of questions about the future of the club going forward! At the request of the Pride Club president, they will remain anonymous.
What are the main goals of the Pride Club? The club president states, “the main goals of Pride Club are to create a safe space for members of the LGBTQ+ Community and allies. We also work to spread knowledge about our community and debunk stereotypes.” This club is a mix of social and educational ideals, exceptional!
What are misconceptions about Pride Club? Since the LGBTQ+ community has a ton of misconceptions about gender, sexuality, and members, we wanted to ask the club president if there were any common misconceptions about pride club to clear them up, their response was “A common misconception is that you have to be specifically gay to join the club. We accept anybody of any gender identity or sexuality, even people that are straight and cisgender who want to help support our community.” So, in other words, anyone is welcome regardless of gender and sexuality.
Announcements? Well, as for announcements, we asked if they ever wanted to gain more members through announcements in any form of way and they responded with, “we're always looking to spread the word of the club and gain more members. The more members the more chances we have to do bigger events and do more for our community.”
Pride Club isn’t without its hardships; however, as there are plenty of challenges facing it. According to the Pride club president “due to the nature of our club we have to deal with severe amounts of hatred towards our members. Many people avoid being openly in our club due to the possibility of bullying and hate crimes. People also struggle with holding events due to having to plan safety measures in case someone decides to get violent with members or tries to sabotage our event/club in any way.”
A handful of members have described the club as “awesome sauce!” and we couldn’t agree more! This club operates on Mondays during lunch. Support this club and fight homophobia together!
