A Student Curated Guide: What To Do in Flagstaff
A Student Curated Guide: What To Do in Flagstaff
Lillee Martin
Flagstaff, Arizona, is a college town—among many things—and can sometimes be overtaken by the city’s priorities of catering to a college audience, or tourism. This often leaves the town’s individuals to scramble for activities or things to do, which creates an air of boredom and stale energy among the community, especially among high school students. The journalism class here at Flagstaff High School intends to contribute to the resolution of these issues by providing a comprehensive list of the most appreciated places and opportunities in Flagstaff—for high school students, from high school students.
As the results of the survey filtered in, it is important to note the frequency of commentary regarding positive feelings towards the thrifting scene in Flagstaff, with majority of the votes recognizing either Bookman’s—a chain second-hand consignment retailer located on Milton Road who sells physical and visual media like books, CDs, cassettes, vinyl, DVDs, video games, and merchandise—or Goodwill; another chain second-hand store with multiple warehouse locations scattered across the city of Flagstaff. Goodwill prioritizes the sales of donated clothing, but the additional available products can range from home decoration, day-to-day necessities, dish-ware, bedding, toys, to even furniture—and so much more.
A vast majority of the remaining respondents said that they enjoy spending their time in Downtown Flagstaff (photographed here). Some downtown businesses mentioned among the survey replies include: Steep, Bigfoot BBQ, and Diablo Burger—a wonderful assortment of local restaurants to stop by while walking around downtown and exploring the variety of shops.
Finally, the last recommendations from the Flagstaff High School journalism class would be Sono Kitchen, walking around and enjoying the beautiful scenery, and the North Quad at NAU to sit and admire the fresh air as autumn encroaches. If you are in need of a few more outdoor suggestions, take a look at a hike in the beautiful wilderness of Flagstaff—visit locations like Humphrey’s Peak, the aspen forest, Snowbowl, Sunset Crater, Fatman’s Loop, etc.—or even stop by Lake Mary to watch the sunset before the leaves change. There are so many perfectly suitable opportunities around Flagstaff to nurture your boredom, you just have to know where to start.
