Social Media: Does It Affect You?
Social Media: Does It Affect You?
Isabel Hernandez Rodriguez
Social media has been a big portion of what we use our phone for other than texting, watching movies, or really anything else. Social media has found itself to be quite the popular topic when it comes to what can have a big effect on teens today. Either it be on the topic of beauty standards, politics, or other influences.
Algorithms choose the topics and content you see based on what you, the reader, want to see and it can change. You wanted to buy that one bottle of hair spray? Well— here’s ways you can change any insecurity about yourself. I mean look at these really hot models! These are pictures that are totally not photoshopped! Influencers don’t have your best interest; they will see you as an ATM and not a human being. The beauty standard is always changing, if there is something a huge group on the internet loves, they make it the next big thing. Someone can see it and can become unhappy with their bodies which can lead to doing more harm than good. There is no way to keep up with such standards. It is important to note models in magazines are often photoshopped and don’t look like plastic dolls in real life.
A lot of things online aren’t what they seem to be and can be spreading a harmful message to unsupervised children on the internet. They might see something that can stick to their brain and can’t unlearn what they see with their eyes. So, in some way, social media can affect you and maybe it already has.
