School Boundaries: Phones Away!

School Boundaries: Phones Away!

Caylee Barnett

A new policy, HB 2484, has been made to schools all around Arizona and has officially made its way to Flagstaff High School, changing how students use their phones during the school day. This new law limits the usage of cell phones during the school day. Students may go on their phones only for emergencies and educational purposes allowed by the teacher. Katie Hobbs, Governor of Arizona has signed this law back in April 2025.

This policy has made it very clear that you are to keep phones away and focus in class. The primary goal of this was to “reduce distractions in class”, and to encourage students to focus more in class and less on their phones. HB 2484 was originally proposed back in 2023, but was dismissed up until now.

As expected, the reaction to this law gives mixed feelings between the staff and students. Many students aren’t so happy about this law due to the inconvenience of not communicating with family, friends, etc. One student has said, “I’m not even able to call or message my own family and friends without getting in trouble.” Teachers may also agree that it is an inconvenience and others may be fond of it, Mr. Williams, an English 9 teacher, said; “I feel like we are trying to put a Band-Aid on a massive wound.” Which overall, HB 2484 gives an interesting spark in debate between the students and staff. The law may be helpful with focusing on learning and teaching, but it seems it’s not making a huge difference with the goal they are trying to achieve, and may also have its downsides to it.
