Swimming in the Woods

Sienna Chitwood

On October, 7th 2025, the Flagstaff High Swim School Team had an away meet in Cottonwood, AZ. The team as a whole did great, and there were some swimmers who swam some events for the first time! One of them was Fynn Burgoon, a varsity freshman, who swam Four young people pose for a photo, making silly faces.her first 500 freestyle. Where Fynn cranked out a 7:01. During her race, Fynn, felt “it was way better than I imagined, and I am glad it's over with. I was so nervous that I had butterflies in my throat, I had to keep swallowing.” Fynn also raced in the 200 medley and the 400 freestyle relays. Another swimmer that competed in the 500 freestyle was Karma Saathoff. Karma, a varsity sophomore, said, “before I was pretty nervous even though I did it last year, but during it it was a lot easier and I had a lot more energy than last time.” Karma also swam in the 400-freestyle relay, and the 200-medley relay.

The medley relay is where a swimmer swims 50 yards of each stroke: butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle. This event is not exclusively a relay race; it could be an individual event as well. Along with a lot of new times, there were a lot of personal records pushed out from the Flag High Swim Team, one of them was JV’s sophomore, Elsie Huntamer. Swimming in the 100-meter backstroke; Elsie dropped 10 seconds from her time last year. During her race she felt, “I was really scared and tired because I had a race right before.” Elsie also swam in the Medley Relay, 50 Freestyle and the 200 Freestyle Relay.

The next meet is the last home meet of the season on October 16th against Payson and Winslow. The last invitational meet before state championships is on Friday October, 17th at Kingman, and the last meet of the season is on October, 23 in Prescott, AZ.
