College in This Economy?

Sienna Chitwood

Society as a whole today seems to have the same main mind set, and that is that college is the only place to go if you want to make it in this world. However, as the economy changes, is it worth the risk of paying off a lifelong debt rather than going straight to the workforce? While there are many benefits to both sides, the real factor is the money. People with college degrees tend to earn higher wages and there is also the fact of having more employment stability.  If you join the workforce right after high school, you'll not have the debt to schools, and you get immediate hands-on experience. There are many different outlooks on the expenses and the opportunities colleges or universities can give you. Amaya Antigone expressed, “how colleges are expensive because they have a better reputation and more resources.” The economy benefits from people who do go through college such as doctors, and lawyers that help save lives and bring justice on a daily basis.

The inflation on student debt can be one of the downsides of going to college. Even years after they get their degree, students stillThe facade of a university building with large columns and the words 'THE UNIVERSITY OF'. are paying off debt years later. There are also the costs of the colleges or university that are concerning for some students. Sydney Crary stated that, “I have family members who are in their 40’s and still have student debt, and I think that it is kind of insane how much you have to pay for college.” She also thinks that, “college is a good idea if you know what you want to go into in life.” There are students who know for a fact that they don't want to go too collage like Sofia Fontinni. She expressed that she wouldn’t go to college because, “most jobs don’t pay more for your college experience, all the jobs that I’ve seen based off other people’s experiences doesn't help get them hired.”

College isn’t for people who struggle in their school environment. Some students do benefit better from not going to college while other people do need to go to college to fulfill their dream jobs. No matter what you decide what to do with your life, you should worry about one main thing; your overall happiness. Just because you do or don't go to college, doesn't make you better or worse than someone else.
