FHS Psychological Support

Santiago Romero

Vanessa, The Flagstaff High School Social Worker, is dedicated to providing support for students' mental health and making sure that they feel comfortable talking to someone. Having a space to work through any conflict that a student may be struggling with is important to Ms. Vanessa. She hopes that all students realize they have the resources for support at the school like teachers and counselors that can be utilized.

When a student is dealing with issues and feels that they need a space alone, they can go to the counselor’s office and ask to use the tranquility room. Filled with a dim light, boxes of fidgets, and soft comfortable chairs, the tranquility room is a perfect area to relax and reset. By using breathing and grounding exercises, you can take a second to feel better and less worried. The tranquility room is to help all students feel like they are not alone and can have a space to overcome their hardships.

Ms. Vanessa will support the students at FHS by being their safe space and hopes that she can help all students deal with their struggles. She says, “students should have the opportunity to turn to their adults around them for mental health issues like depression.” She hopes that all students will utilize any resources if their mental health is deeply affected like: the 988 Suicide Hotline, the Teen Lifeline (800-248-TEEN) & (link for help), or even the 24-Hour Crisis Line (1-844-534-3673) & (1-844-534-HOPE).

Ms. Vanessa has worked at Flag High for about 5 years in Flagstaff where she graduated from NAU with a Bachelor degree in Criminology and Criminal Justice with a Minor and Masters in Social Work. When you walk into Flag High and go to the Counselor’s office, Ms. Vanessa’s door is the first door on the right, and she is available for any student dealing with any issues related to mental health. Reach out to Ms. Vanessa, any adults, or a hotline listed above if you are dealing with any mental health concerns like depression, suicidal thoughts, and any other deeply personal problems.
