Flagstaff High School: History Behind the Eagles
Flagstaff High School: History Behind the Eagles
Caylee Barnett
Have you ever wondered about the history of Flagstaff High School? In Flagstaff, Arizona, this school became one of the first official high schools established. FHS was established back in 1923, which marked a huge milestone in educational history. Before its establishment, it was originally a frontier town, with railroads, lumber, and livestock. Which seems way different back then to what it is today, so it shows a lot of improvement.
Originally the school’s location was at Emerson Elementary School, which was a temporary location due to it being overcrowded as more students enrolled. Of course, it didn’t take long for the city to recognize the needed space for a separate high school building. With that in mind, eventually, Flagstaff High School was relocated to where it is today. The transition to a larger campus was a valuable moment in the school's history, allowing students to learn and enjoy the experience with more space. This new site was more modern and offered students better classrooms, sports facilities, and a more structured environment for learning. Emerson Elementary school was later on demolished back in 1986, and now no longer exists as a school, but instead was partially used for the library that is located 300 Aspen Avenue, where it was once a school.
During this time, the high school began to improve and evolve to what it is today. Mr. Louchart says, “Over the years the technology has changed the most.” Although the school may have been a little similar to what it is today, the technology will always stay up to date! It went from a simple educational high school into a central school for local culture and community life, and is now a successful school with an estimated number of 1,700 or more students.
