Assignment Piles and Burnout

Assignment Piles and Burnout

Ash Freyer

A lot of students throughout the school year experience being stressed and incredibly burned out. Students are often expected to do a lot of different tasks and assignments every day, and students often don’t even get to take a day off because the assignments that they miss will pile up. Some students experience a major decline in their mental health because they are constantly worrying about going to school so that assignments don’t pile up on them. Some students will even come to school when they are sick to make sure that they don’t miss anything. Schools often seem to prioritize the material of their classes over the well-being of their students. A lot of students feel that going to school is made out to be more important than taking care of themselves and having a life outside of homework and school.

A collection of papers, notes, and worksheets are spread out on a surface.           Students constantly experience having to juggle lots of different assignments from different classes, and have no time to prioritize themselves when they have to constantly deal with multiple assignments, due dates, and having the word “fail” and “missing” constantly shoved in their faces. Sometimes students have other things going on in their lives and are not able to deal with all of the stress. A lot of assignments for different classes end up being due the same week giving students very little time to themselves when they have to constantly worry about the many assignments coming up that week. Sometimes students even have to have multiple tests and quizzes back-to-back in one day, they may have an English test in one period and a math test in another.

One senior student at Flagstaff High School said, “I have roughly 10 due, I estimated because a lot of teachers give assignments the day that they are due.” This quote is showing that in just one week, some students have loads of assignments that are due from all different classes. Some students also have too many teachers expecting them to be able to get assignments done in the small amount of time in a class period, this often leads to students having even more streets, and leads to them being burned out faster. Some students have even more than 10 assignments due in one week.

This mass onslaught of work has a lot of people crushing under the pressures and feeling completely exhausted all of the time. Some students are losing their sparks of creativity because they are so burned out and exhausted that they don’t even have the time or the energy left to do the things that they enjoy. Some students even feel as though they are losing a part of themselves because they are so busy dealing with all the different assignments that they are expected to do, leading to them to ignore doing things that make them happy to finish assignments.
