Cool Cats Dine at 1899

Haven Carey

Flagstaff is a town abounding with music lovers. Pickin in the Pines, the several music venues around town, and local artists busking on street corners are all testaments to this. There is one great genre that we’ve felt the cold absence from for a long time—jazz. Jazz permeates every great city, and it has finally found its way to ours. After experimenting with the occasional Jazz Night in the past, 1899 Bar and Grill has decided to make it a monthly occurrence.

1899 restaurant            1899 Bar and Grill is casual dining and open to the public. William Brandt, the brand and partnership manager, executed the first 1899 Jazz Night in late October of 2024. He wanted to reinforce that it was casual dining, and hiring student musicians from the Kitt School of Music at Northern Arizona University was the perfect way to do it.

The first Wednesday of every month will be an 1899 Jazz Night featuring the Nate Bull Trio. Since the student musicians have been so successful in the past, Brandt decided to hire faculty to perform on the third Wednesday of every month. Along with these events, 1899 has made other changes to make it more appealing to the general public. They’ve lowered prices while retaining food quality in order to make dining more accessible to students. Parking is abundant in the garage across the street from the restaurant as well.

The twice monthly 1899 Jazz Nights are not the only events that they offer. In the past, they’ve had blues bands and country artists perform, and there will likely be more to come. Events are listed on their Instagram and Facebook, which can be found under the handle, “1899barandgrill” and on the website “1899barandgrill.com” They will be hosting a Halloween Costume Contest on Halloween evening, and anyone that arrives in costume will receive a free dessert along with their order.
