Haunted Halls
Haunted Halls

Eerie stories and ghost tales permeate Flagstaff's history. Some of the most iconic buildings downtown are infamous due to the haunting stories that have been told about them again and again. The Weatherford Hotel, The Monte Vista, and the tunnels under the town are all rumored to be haunted. These sites have since been turned into tourist attractions, and spectacles that books have been written about.
The Weatherford Hotel is said to have been the site where a newlywed couple was brutally murdered in the 1930s. While the story told is inconsistent and some claim that it was a murder-suicide, the room has since been transformed into storage because it was too haunted for guests to stay in. Visitors have also claimed that they’ve witnessed spirits meandering through the halls and knocking bottles off of shelves.
The Hotel Monte Vista, opening decades after the Weatherford Hotel in 1927, is perhaps even more well known for its rumored hauntings. A notable story is that of a butcher that hung meat from the chandelier in his hotel room because he didn’t want to rent a workplace. He died, and no one knew until the smell of rancid meat began to emanate from his room. John Wayne, the famous country actor, also stayed at the Hotel Monte Vista and reported hearing the knocking of a friendly phantom bellboy. Other guests have reported hearing this knocking as well, but when they opened the doors, no one was there.
A network of tunnels exists underneath downtown Flagstaff, originally built to house steam pipes. Since, many dubious events have been suggested to have occurred. Opium smuggling, moonshining, and gambling are amongst the nefarious activities that may have taken place there. While they are now closed off to the public, tours such as “The Flagstaff Underground" highlight them.
