Help Save Lives

Piper Bauer

In Arizona, we are at an all-time low for blood that is used to save lives. Friday, November 7th, 2025 is the first blood drive this school year for Flagstaff High School; the blood drive is in the commons and goes from 12:30PM to 5:30PM. People ages 16 and 17 need a permission form, you can get one from either a HOSA member or Miss Donte.

The blood that is donated from the blood drive goes to people in the hospital who need it for things such as emergency transfusionsThe American Red Cross logo features a red cross on a white background. or dramatic blood loss. According to Miss Dante, “Usually one pouch is able to essentially save up to three lives.” Currently in Arizona we are in a critical need for emergency blood, which means we don't have the blood used in those emergencies, so we have been asking for blood from other states.

If you are considering or planning to donate blood, you should make sure to take the proper precautions. The main things you should do is stay hydrated and eat iron-rich foods. Some foods with high iron are: meats, beans, Cheerios, and Frosted Flakes. Along with this, get a good night's sleep the night before and make sure to eat before donating. Don’t forget to bring your student ID or other alternate forms of identification.

Donating blood is commonly thought to be painful, however many people describe it as similar to a shot. Another common misconception about donating blood is that you can’t donate if you’ve recently got a tattoo or piercing. You can still donate blood with a new tattoo or piercing, unless it was done at home in an unsanitary environment. You cannot donate blood if you already have in the last three months, or if you donated power red, which isn’t typical for younger people or people who haven’t donated before.

The goal number of people to donate is 55, if you are able and fit the requirements, you should make sure to donate blood and help save people's lives. If you aren’t able to attend this upcoming blood drive, there will be two more this school year in January and April.
