Animals have been used to benefit society's needs since the dawn of time. They provide things like food, helping with hunting and companionship. They have saved human lives and helped those who are differently abled, but how do we repay them? We repay them by: pouring toxic chemicals in their eyes, blinding them and giving them painful chemical burns, sometimes leading to death. Animal testing is used by major makeup companies such as but not limited to MAC Cosmetics, O.P.I and NARS. Most of the common excuses for testing on animals are the laws and regulations held up by countries around the world. According to ethicelephant.com, “H\however, it’s not stated anywhere that MAC Cosmetics has taken any steps to meet the above preconditions in order to avoid animal testing while selling in China.” This policy in China is to ‘relegate’ human safety but at the cost of animals ' lives and health. O.P.I is a popular nail polish brand with many colors and different nail products that are sold internationally. According to crueltyfreekitty.com, “O.P.I is owned by Coty, a company that tests on animals. Not only are some O.P.I not cruelty-free but neither is their parent company.”
The company Coty owns very popular and expensive luxury brands such as Gucci, CoverGirl, Tiffany & co. and Calvin Klein among many others. The brand Covergirl, however, does not test on animals. It has been certified cruelty-free by Leaping Bunny. The Leaping Bunny is a program that certifies products whether or not they are free of animal testing.
Another very popular makeup brand that tests on animals is NARS. Much like MAC they test on animals due to international laws and regulations in China. According to verygoodlight.com, “because NARS wants to sell their products in China , they must follow Chinese animal testing laws. Any ingredient or product to be sold in the Chinese market must be tested on animals before hitting shelves and finished products can be taken off shelves to be subjected to random animal testing.”
Animals are innocent creatures and it has been proven that we don't need to test them to check if product ingredients are safe. Animal testing is an inhuman and unjust practice against innocent animals so to check if your beauty products have been approved by the Leaping Bunny program which depicts a happy little bunny sticker somewhere on the product.
