Lifeline of Teaching

Santiago Romero

It is very common for students to experience bullying whether teachers may miss it or not. Ms. d’Oronzio, History teacher at Flagstaff High School, believes that students should feel safe at school. In her class, she notices students bullying one another where others are too quiet to speak up. As most students don’t realize the adults who can protect them, they can lose themselves and forget how much they have been impacted.

When teachers other than Ms. d’Oronzio notice this bullying, they usually deal with it, but students are very quiet to speak up. Many ofA young woman smiles while working on a laptop at a desk in a classroom. the teachers in the dungeon, the 700-hallway downstairs, share with Ms. d’Oronzio how difficult it is to see bullying as it is not always in their control. Most teachers who talk to Ms. d’Oronzio explore that they wish they could support the students more by letting them know the support provided.

As a teacher, she knows the emotional impact on students and how it can affect teaching where it can ruin student’s grades. Bullying is prominent in all places where it is often misunderstood. As people see others in the hallways, it is often behind a veil where the truth of their story lies. It can be hard for someone to care for one another, but it is important to realize the significance of one’s story to another’s actions.

Because of the impact of bullying, students are encouraged to talk to family, friends, and even siblings. By not telling your story, you can be very isolated. Examples like the internet can be a double-edged sword where good can come from hearing other stories like yours, but also, it can be bad as it reminds you of struggles that aren’t very welcoming. Students that bully can be insecure and feel a need for power. If students need help from most teachers, like Ms. d’Oronzio, it is encouraged to speak up if they need support with any difficulties that can arise from their time at Flagstaff High School.
