Reconstruction VS Refurbish: Marshall Magnet Elementary School

Lauren B.

Marshall Magnet Elementary School, a K-5th grade school in Flagstaff since 1952, is opening a new school building. On the 20th of November, an event is being held to allow alumni, A modern building with green and tan walls, trees, and picnic tables.students and parents as well as staff to walk through the old school. Afterwards, guests may tour the new Marshal Elementary School building. You may know the site that the school has been built on as the previous site of Flagstaff Middle School, which was demolished in April of 2024.

Located at 850 N. Bonito Street, Marshall Elementary School received $25 million dollars after Flagstaff Unified School District voted on a 2022 Bond that would give the board $100 million dollars to improve the schools within the district. After Marshall Elementary School was evaluated, the board decided a new building would be most beneficial to the school, as the systems within the building needed extensive repair or replacement. There were also additional concerns with students crossing Bonito Street, which narrowed down options of sites to build the new school building. FUSD selected the land where Flagstaff Middle School was demolished, and began construction in April of 2024. School at the new building is to begin when students return to school after winter break on January 5th, 2026.

As the current Marshall building is located very close to Flagstaff High School, student parking may be increased after the move in. However, many previous alumni of Marshall Magnet Elementary School may be turned away from revisiting if the old building is demolished. One previous student noted the nostalgia of the old building with the rock walls and artwork furnishing the wooden paneling in the hallways, saying that “the school is going to lose a lot of its charm.” with the modernity of the new building.

This is the single longest shutdown of the government in United States history, beating out only the previous shutdown under President Trump’s former administration, which lasted 35 days. Everyone in the country with this knowledge has the understanding that this situation was bad, but what does that mean?

A government shutdown is caused by conflict among the House of Representatives, as well as their miscommunication with the Senate. The Senate consists of 100 representatives—two per state—and works in legislation, or law-making, for a term of six years.
