How To Make a Documentary
Breon Gray
I have made many documentaries in my 3 years of taking Audio/Video and I’ve come to know that making documentaries isn’t only fun, it’s easy. First things first you want to find a topic. It could be anything you imagine Snowboarding, video games, sports, etc. After finding your topic you’ll want to story board. Storyboarding is an effective way to organize and visualize how your project is going to be put together and look. This is usually done with pictures in a comic book type of way for movies, TV shows, and animated films. For storyboarding, it will look more like a Google doc or Google sheet. You’ll mostly just try to jot down bullet points on locations, people (interviewees), times, etc.
Next up is filming, you should have everything ready such as interviewees, locations, and camera. Before you do the interview, you’ll want to record something called B-roll which is usually just footage of things that have to do with your topic. This is usually used to engage your audience and make the documentary less boring. The hardest part of this process is probably editing, especially if you don’t know how to do it. Most people have their own specific editing software they like to use but I usually just use Premiere Pro. The most important thing about a documentary is to convey your message properly and effectively. To do that, your audience has to be engaged, and you can do this by adding music, subtitles and sometimes effects. To make your documentary perfect, all you have to do is assemble the clips and add some music (Lo-fi always works for me) You don’t have to add music like if you want to have a more serious documentary. You can do without it or you can even do a more serious thought-provoking type of music. Believe it or not, music is a big part of any type of film: movies, TV shows, cartoons, documentaries, and even short films.
