Flagstaff High School Self Expression

Flagstaff High School Self Expression

Isabel Hernandez Rodriguez

Self-expression comes in many forms and can be expressed in a lot of ways especially here in Flagstaff High School. You see plenty of students with a ton of style and hobbies that represent that. For example, I use digital and physical art for self-expression. I also utilize poetry to express anything I feel. I asked students what they use for their self-expression, why, and if they have any sort of advice in any type of self-expression.

I first interviewed a very stylish and fashionable, Rin Bowker, who is in my Halloween movie article for the Talon previously. I asked what the main inspiration for their outfits are, a simple, yet important question for this interview. They told me, “no I don’t have a main inspiration for it. I just look around in my closet for what I think is cool, usually on days I don’t want to wear something that feels more exotic or weird. I still try to because I still want to feel like me. I want to feel cool and the clothes are like expressions that I wear.” She continues by saying, “it depends on what I feel in that moment, and I’ll always have different styles depending on what I bought or what I feel about it on that week, month, or day it generally depends” I then asked if the styles are based on certain emotions she feels. She responded with, “well, it’s not just emotion, I guess. It depends on how motivated I feel. ‘I’m going to get everything done, and I’m going to wear a cool outfit today, or I’m feeling tired, and I don’t want to do anything today.’ Though I still try not to wear pajamas to school because I still want to wear something cool, I want to wear something that I like!”

I asked her how she styles her outfits exactly. “There’s a bunch of styles, I recommend something that’s interesting in color and if it’s not interesting in color, it has to be interesting in shape, and if it’s not interesting in shape, it has to be interesting in color.” I asked her one last question and that was if she had any advice for people that are intimidated by expressing themselves within the limits of fashion and wants to have the same vibe as you. She replied with, “yes! Oh my God, if you’re scared to do it, just do it, dawg! If you are scared that someone is going to judge you or something, literally nobody will care. They’re more interested or care more about what they’re wearing. If you want to wear that skirt, wear that skirt, and if you want to wear those socks to school, wear anything you want! Wear those earrings, wear that funky hairstyle, do that makeup!” ladies, gentlemen, everyone in between, and everyone outside of the gender binary, I have just interviewed the Albert Einstein of fashion, I have never been so honored!

When it comes to self-expression, FHS has a handful of students that show self-expression through their hobbies and clubs. For instance, Draven Hough! The band hype man expresses his self-expression via music, the whole band is like a family of artists who self-express! As Draven puts it “don’t let people bring you down in your music talents, you can always express it, you can always share within your music. It’s okay to fail because you can always bring yourself back up and try again… we love having everyone here and give everybody the chance to express themselves in the world of music.” There’s no limit to self-expression here at FHS either it be through art, fashion, music, or writing about what you’re feeling!
