As the school year inches closer to the end of the semester, sports are wrapping up their seasons with powerful final games. Flagstaff High School’s Flag Football Varsity team’s normal season ended on October 29 with a win against rival team Coconino Panthers, and Junior Varsity’s season ended on November 6th with a win of 7-0. The Varsity team advanced to playoffs on November 12th, winning 24-14 against Lee Williams. Their second playoff game was on Saturday, November 15th at Tucson against Salpointe Catholic, ending the Flag Football season after a tough game and loss with a score of 14-49.
When interviewed, Seniors Eliza Badger and Mayla Speer individually reflected on the end of the season, talking about how much the team has grown since the beginning of the year. Eliza said her all-time favorite moments of the season were simply the social connections, inside jokes and team bonding the athletes experienced during both practices and games. Mayla Speer talked about this as well, and how important it is to “enjoy every moment that you spend on the field.”
On random days throughout the week, you could see the remaining spirit on the faces of the players: they could be seen walking around school the day after a game with pink lines across their cheeks, remnants of the staining lipstick used as face paint during game days. And, despite the fact that the team has only existed for 3 years, both JV and Varsity seasons have been filled with numerous wins. The Flagstaff High School Flag Football team was ranked 5th in the state for this season. Mayla Speer talked about how hard the team has worked to get to this position, and how they came together to support one another when a member of the team was injured, “we have worked very hard to prove ourselves this year as a competitive team and get to where we are right now, and we don’t take our success this season for granted.”
