What Teachers Really See: How Teachers View Their Students

Paige Bia

High School students tend to think that teachers don’t notice much. Whether it is using your phone under the table, looking up answers, or the excuses they get for late assignments, teachers see more than the students realize. They notice the effort, the attitude, and even the pattern behind every excuse and every assigned piece of work. It may be frustrating, but they also see the potential, creativity, and moments that remind them of why they teach in the first place.

One teacher shared that today’s students are, “really positive, idealistic, and helpful, with a lot of positive energy.” They said students come by just to visit and say hi, and that it’s become easier to build closer bonds with them. Another teacher added that students are more expressive and open about what is going on in their lives. It can help teachers understand them beyond academics. Many teachers mention how small interactions remind them of exactly why they enjoy their jobs. They appreciate the creativity and humor that students bring to the classroom.

Despite these positive traits, some teachers note the challenges they face with today’s students. One teacher pointed out how much of an impact technology has had on a lot of things. According to another teacher, “Students are more easily entertained with technology.” This only seems to make the job much harder on them. They added that students seem to “struggle with balance” because entertainment is always right at their fingertips.

In the end, teachers don’t just see grades and behavior, but students as individuals. They notice when students are trying their best, when they get burnt out, or when they just need a moment to themselves. Even if it can get frustrating with phones and excuses, teachers care for their students. They see potential in every student who walks through their doors. As difficult as it may be, they wouldn’t be doing these jobs if they didn’t enjoy it.
