Why Are Breaks from School Necessary?
Piper Bauer
Most school districts provide breaks from attending school, such as summer break, fall break, winter break, and spring break. These breaks can vary from a week to up to three months, and usually revolve around holidays or events. Are these breaks actually necessary to have a successful school year?
The main break from school would be summer break; it’s the longest and also it separates the school years. While it is commonly argued that during summer break many students miss out on learning, this break is an opportunity to explore other experiences and opportunities. During this break some students choose to find a job and gain experience in the working field. Other students may choose to do a sport, travel, volunteer, or anything that can prepare them for their future. As much as you need to learn in school, you need to learn outside of school as well.
According to mindabovematter.com, a site known for providing assistance and information on mental health, “this period of reduced demands helps to lower cortisol levels, the body’s primary stress hormone.” With less stress, many things such as sleep, concentration, and productivity can all improve. Having a break from school can also help students spend time with family and friends and overall improve their relationships which will be with them for many years. If a student is given the time to lower their stress, it will also help their focus and give them a new start once the break ends.
From a student's perspective, breaks in school are something to look forward to. Breaks provide an opportunity to get caught up on class work without constantly getting more at the same rate. Breaks also help teachers finish grading especially with midterms and finals. Without breaks, students would become burnt out and teachers would be overworked with all their tasks.
