Ice Cold Education

In Flagstaff, immigrants are being affected around the country for reasons like The Supreme Court’s decision in September to support racial profiling as they allow ICE Agents to detain people with factors based on race, ethnicity, and language. This is referred to as the Vasquez Perdomo v Noem case. A flagstaff citizen, Prudencia Maestas, has offered her insight on the resources for immigrants in Flagstaff and how it can affect Flagstaff High School. On January 23rd, FUSD superintendent gave his word on the recent changes to immigration laws relating to the fear in Flagstaff. He shared that policies restrict ICE and CBP from entering sensitive areas including schools. If ICE needs to contact a student to interview them, they must have a warrant and have it reviewed by the superintendent and district attorney where they will contact parents and do so.

While this isn’t ideal, most schools are already turning to solutions around the country. Many are training students to know their rights, making ICE have a written policy to keep them away from sensitive areas, and pledging to support youth immigrant families. With things like mental health, information, legal assistance, food centers, or unhoused mutual aid, Prudencia Maestas is providing support for ALL immigrants where they should feel safe. Prudencia Maestas says, “the country is immigrants. I’m just helping people know their rights.” The Bill of Rights including amendments 1-10 prove the undeniable unconstitutional mess that ICE has been butting their heads into. An example of this is the Tenth Amendment, It states that the Federal government is restricted from the usage of state and local resources or personnel to enforce federal regulatory programs. This means that states can choose not to cooperate with ICE, even if they seek assistance on identifying or detaining immigrants. Outside of the Bill of Rights, the Fourteenth amendment relates to immigration due to the statement that all individuals born in the U.S. are legally citizens. It is important to know your rights. You will ultimately benefit by knowing your rights if you are an immigrant, but you should also learn them anyway or even participate in actively fighting for your community as well.
