The Talon Revival

Ramon Fernandez IV

Journalism Class

After a 30 year plus hiatus, high school journalism at Flagstaff High School is making its long-awaited revival! Now known as The Talon, we aim to bring informed and well written articles about our school, town, and community. It is our goal is to publish a new edition every Friday to keep the news current and relevant for our readers.

A black and white photo shows a group of people seated around a table, likely a staff meeting.High school journalism has a long and rich tradition at Flagstaff High School from it very inception. When FHS started in 1923, journalism was one of the original programs that students were able to take as an elective. Then known as The Green and Brown, the journalism staff went on to report the many facets of their community for the next 60 years. The staff at The Green and Brown not only wrote articles for their school paper, but they also wrote in writing competitions that were published in the annual Kinlani yearbook. Another fun facet that they participated in was hosting a barn dance in the 1920s for their peers to enjoy.

At some point, The Green and Brown was rebranded as The Talon, which the combined classes of 2026-2029 overwhelmingly voted to name this newspaper. However, sometime in the 1990s, The Talon stopped publishing and the program no longer existed. It is unclear why the program went under; it could have been because of funding, or it could have been a lack of interest in the class. Flagstaff High School Assistant Principal Matt Barquin seems to think that it was forgotten about when the last journalism teacher left FHS.

Whatever the reason why FHS lost its journalism program, the current staff of The Talon is excited to publish their articles in order to inform the student body of current events, editorials, human interest pieces, sports articles etc.

If your club, team, or program has any interest in getting featured in The Talon, please email Mr. Fern at rfernandez@fusd1.org and write a quick description about what you would like us to write about.

Finding New Life Among the Courtyards

Ash Freyer

Mrs. Musta’s honor’s biology class has made it their mission to help restore Flagstaff High’s courtyards to a beautiful and lush state. Their mission is to make it so students will actually want to go into the courtyards and spend time in them instead of the courtyards being empty and overgrown.

Cruisin’ Through the Rio

On September 13, Flagstaff High School hosted a Journey to Janeiro themed Homecoming Dance in the dome. Following a week of preparatory events like: the bonfire, the assembly, and the football game, the Homecoming Dance was the well awaited grand finale. Like most years, it consisted of sweat drenched teenagers engaging in an almost unending frenzy of jumping to repetitive songs. The music elicited an uproarious cheer every time the DJ transitioned from recognizable hit to recognizable hit.
