As the holiday season comes to an end, so does prime movie release season. In the month of December alone, numerous sequels and threequels were released, such as: Avatar: Fire and Ash, Zootopia 2, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, Wicked: For Good, and more. People rush to Harkins not only to escape the cold, but to see these long-awaited films with big Hollywood actors.
Many of the movies that came out this season were nominated for The Golden Globes. Hamnet, a movie regarding the tale of
Shakespeare and the loss of his son, garnered 6 nominations: Best Screenplay, Original Score, and Best Motion Picture Drama, and more. In the end, the movie won both Best Actress in a drama movie, as well as Best Motion Picture Drama. Marty Supreme, an action film starring Timothee Chalamet, won for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy, and Sentimental Value, a film about a Swedish family, had 8 nominations, winning a Golden Globe with Best Supporting Actor. Overall, most of the new movies have been well received by audiences around the world.
Letterboxd users have been working overtime to review and critique the newest films. Hamnet and Sentimental Value have been well received by novice critics with an average of 4.2 out of 5 stars, exceedingly high for standard Letterboxd reviews. One u
ser says, “they’re calling [H]amnet and sentimental value the double feature that kills you.”
Not all audiences flocked to Harkins to write an in-depth Letterboxd movie review, but instead to watch lighter films with friends and family. Easy viewing movies and much anticipated sequels were also released, such as Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, Regretting You and Zootopia 2. Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 hasn’t been as well received, but is still a fun watch, as well as Regretting You for Colleen Hoover fans or people looking for a twisted plot with many dramatic crying scenes.
However, despite the end of the holiday season, more big productions are already set to release in 2026. Wuthering Heights, featuring the new Charli XCX album with the same name, is set to release on February 13th, after the release of Charli XCX’s A24 movie, The Moment, on January 30th. Esteemed director Christopher Nolan is releasing The Odyssey on July 17th, based off of the famous book, and Zendaya and Robert Pattinson star in The Drama, a movie about a couple being put to the test.
As streaming services become more popular day by day, less people are spending their money on movie tickets, choosing the comfort of their home tv rather than a big screen. Support your local theaters by going to see movies in theaters!
