Can We Get an Update on the Dress Code?

Can We Get an Update on the Dress Code?

Auddie Lentine

The Flagstaff High School dress code is supposed to reflect our community values, promote safety, and student learning. When a dress code is not relevant with the times, it stops working as a helpful guide, allowing for inconsistencies that lead to frustration for both staff and students.

Information on when the dress code was written is not widely available, so who really knows how outdated this issue could be? When I was a freshman, the dress code was consistently rubbed in my face and it honestly destroyed my self-confidence. As a senior, I no longer see the dress code being set into place, and it makes me happy that younger students are able to express themselves however they please.

The dress code now simply says to dress neatly, and to cover everything that needs to be covered. In 2022, the dress code removed the rules against wearing leggings, and pajamas to school (which was never followed by students to begin with) but that’s some freedom we got from the officials.

After asking one of my freshman friends if the dress code has any potential to strike down her confidence, she responded with, “Yes, I think it’ll bring down confidence in what girls wear and how they feel about themselves” and many others can agree with her. Therefore, the dress code is simply just an outdated way to keep people in order, and students are surely happy that it is slowly dying off.
