The Importance of Music

Piper Bauer

For as long as humans have existed, so has music. Music is something for everyone, with thousands of different genres and artists, etc. While music is commonly associated with entertainment, it also helps with cognitive development, emotional expression, stress relief, and social connection. No matter where someone lives or what language they speak, music is like a universal language.

Beginning from a young age, music surrounds you. If you enter a daycare or a preschool, you’ll most likely hear music at someTwo people with blonde hair wear earbuds, showcasing ear piercings. point. This is specifically intended to aid cognitive development. When children engage with music, it builds cognitive skills such as attention, memory, and problem solving. As you age, this still benefits motivation, for example, upbeat music can raise your energy and even your ability to focus. This makes dreaded tasks, such as studying, easier to complete. If you listen to music while you study, it can also help you to better recall the information for the test — along with keeping you focused.

No matter how old you are, music provides a way to process and express feelings. Once you can focus on your emotions, you can more clearly understand an issue and how to fix it. Listening to music is proven to reduce both stress and anxiety. Music serves as a good distraction, a way to escape everyday expectations and pressures; whether you’re playing it or just listening. Along with this comes lyricism, or song writing, which has the power to evoke deep emotions and inspire change. If you want to express your sadness, anger, joy, or any emotion for that matter, there are entire genres with hundreds of thousands of songs to listen to as an outlet for expression.

You are very likely to meet at least one other person with similar music taste to you throughout your life. Attending a concert offers an opportunity to meet people who share similar musical interests as you. Music can even unite people from all across the world. Experimenting in a band or choir class helps you meet new people who you have the opportunity to bond with. It’s an appreciation of music that can connect people and form strong relationships.

Overall, music provides us with so many benefits. We have never lived in a world without music, and it is essential to the human experience.  Whether you love it or not, music will always be a prominent factor in your life. Music brings a value to life that is easily overlooked.
