Celebrating Spirit, Creativity, and Community

Celebrating Spirit, Creativity, and Community

Paige Bia

Over the past few years, Flagstaff High School has made an effort to bring more energy and entertainment into school activities by introducing events that help keep the school year fun and eventful. Instead of school feeling like the same things almost every year, these new additions have created opportunities for students to get involved, meet new people, and to enjoy being a part of the community. The focus of these events has shifted from being less inclusive towards building an environment where students feel included, engaged, and excited about what’s happening at school.

One of the most exciting additions has been Battle of the Bands, which started years ago. It gives student musicians the chance to perform live and compete in front of a crowd of their peers. It’s not about winning, but rather about showcasing talents, building confidence, and creating an atmosphere where everyone feels free to express themselves. Alongside that, cultural celebrations like Native American and Hispanic Spirit Week have become important parts of the school year, highlighting traditions, history, and identity through theme days, activities, and student involvement. Special Olympics Spirit Week also plays a big role, encouraging students to celebrate and uplift one another.

Events like the Craft Bazaars have added to different kinds of experience, giving students and others the chance to sell homemade items, display artwork, and even explore small businesses ideas. These events allow creativity to take center stage and give students a sense of independence and pride in their work.

Finally, the return of the homecoming bonfire a few years ago, has brought back a sense of tradition and school spirit that many students haven’t experienced before. The bonfire creates a space where students can gather and celebrate together, leading up to the big game. Altogether, these events have helped transform the school environment into one that feels more connected, spirited, and memorable for everyone involved.
