Summer Jobs: How Will You Spend Your Summer?

Caylee Barnett

Summer break is getting closer to coming up, meaning that it is also the best time for high school students to gain work experience. Whilst gaining work experience that means, learning new skills, and making money—whether or not it’s for building up a resume or even to be occupied for the summer. There are a lot of summer jobs that can be fitting for high school students.

For one, there are retail jobs like working as a cashier, or even a sales associate. This is pretty common for high school students The words 'SUMMER JOBS' are displayed against a backdrop of a blue sky and clouds.because stores need a lot of help in the summer. Working for any of these can help build up your social skills, learn about customer service, and teamwork. Another plus to this, is that you can have a flexible schedule of hours. Luckily in Flagstaff, there are plenty of fast-food restaurants, gas stations, for example Circle K, which hires teens around the ages 16+.

If you are interested in looking after kids or animals; babysitting or pet sitting is just for you! With this you are in charge of your own schedule and can get paid hourly. Not to mention, this is a great way to gain responsibility and life experience.

Have an interest in math, science, reading, and more? Try tutoring! Tutoring can be a rewarding way of earning money, and is also a very helpful job that teaches students, while also reinforcing your own knowledge. If unable to make it in person, do online tutoring!

Another option for the summer would include being a lifeguard; this is the perfect classic summer job, and also can be fun for those who enjoy swimming. Many areas with pools hire lifeguards during summer time. You’ll get to spend your summer keeping others safe, being outside, and can even earn certifications that will be good for resumes. In Flagstaff there is the Aqua plex which is offering part-time, temporary roles for students around the ages 15+.

Many students also apply for working at the movies—one anonymous student says, “For the summer I am planning on working at the Harkins Theatre, because I heard you can get free movie tickets.” Working at the movie theater can be an amazing opportunity to build up work experience, make money, friends, etc.

Summer jobs can help a lot with experience, money, and even to be occupied. This gives high school students many opportunities which is definitely worth it!
